Oral posture & breathing

Retraining the muscles behind the smile

Myofunctional therapy is a series of simple, targeted exercises that train proper tongue and lip posture, nasal breathing, and swallowing.

What myofunctional therapy is

Myofunctional therapy is a type of physical exercise program that retrains the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face. It aims to fix improper oral resting postures, encourage nasal breathing, and correct swallowing patterns.

Core goals

  • Nasal breathing. Switching from chronic mouth breathing to breathing through the nose.
  • Tongue posture. Training the tongue to rest fully on the roof of the mouth instead of pressing against or between the teeth.
  • Correct swallowing. Stopping the tongue from pushing forward during a swallow (tongue thrust).

Common uses

  • Sleep issues. Reducing snoring and mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Dental support. Helping prevent teeth crowding or shifting after braces.
  • Jaw pain. Relieving tension linked to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and teeth grinding.
  • Habit elimination. Stopping thumb sucking, pacifier use, or lip biting.

A powerful partner to orthodontics

Better oral posture supports jaw growth, helps hold your results, and reinforces the airway work we do.

We'll guide you (or your child) through the exercises and, when helpful, coordinate with a myofunctional therapist.
